We have been taking advantage of the awesome weather and decided to go to Vashon Island for the day. We went to the farmer's market and were pleasantly surprised by the fabulous produce selection. We picked up some fresh basil, cherry tomatoes, peruvian potatoes, jupiter peaches and pluots. For those of you that have never had a pluot or do not know what they are, they are a combination of a plum and an apricot. At the market the farmer told us that the peruvians are perfect for fries because they have more startch so they are less sitcky to the pan.....we shall see about that.
After the farmer's market we had lunch at the General Store and tried lahvosh for the first time. Lavosh is an Armenian cracker which they then top like a pizza. Once full, we headed down the country roads and came across the most wonderous place on the island, Seabreeze Farm where there is a wonderous u-pick. Between the sun shining, the clear blue skies and berries the size of silver dollars I was in heaven. I long to live in a place like this, well minus the work, but with the bounty right outside your doorstep. Most notably it was Cameron's first berry picking expedition and I assured him that it does not get better than this. If not for the fact that we were short on cash I could have easily dropped a ton of money here. They had blueberries, Chesterberries and Locknessberries, raspberries and golden berries. Apparently, the Chesterberries and the Lockness berries are a variety of blackberries, except for the fact that they are thornless and a tad less sweet. They are perfection not only in form and size, but who does not love a thornless bush to pick from??
