Shopping in Reykjavik, Iceland
Reykjavik is one of those charming little cities I wish I could fold up and put in my pocket. I would love to be able to pull it out and transport myself there whenever I am feeling blue. Although two thirds of the Icelandic population live in Reykjavik it has never felt busy or frantic like other cities we have visited. Reykjavik is a very walkable city full of interesting things to stop and take a look at. I am drawn to the rows of brightly colored buildings and I have found so many amazing places to shop while I am there.
If I were going to invest in purchasing one thing while in Iceland might I suggest purchasing something wool. When I am on vacation I try my best to avoid the touristy tchotchkes stores and instead find those which support local artists and artisans. When it comes to wool there are an abundance of choices from Icelandic sweaters, scarves, gloves and hats to ear warmers and socks. Some of my favorite places to shop in Iceland are:
The Hand Knitting Association of Iceland: This association was founded in 1977, a few women who had used knitting to supplement their families income, decided to join forces and establish an organization in order to facilitate more extensive marketing of their knitted products. This store is a treasure trove, where you are able to buy directly from the people who make the items. In addition, you are able to purchase yarn high quality yarn for future projects of your own.
Geysir: Is a high end luxury store where you can purchase one of a kind pieces from vendors such as Farmers Market Iceland. The store sells unique Icelandic wool along with other raw natural materials such as silk and leather.
Kraum: This store is an artists collective store where they sell everything from chocolate to clothing, jewelry and housewares. I have purchased both a handmade ring and a sponge on one visit.
66' North: This is what I would consider the North Face of Iceland, they specialize in outdoors items for the entire family. While we were there we purchased a stroller bag, mittens and hat for our baby.
Iglo and Indi: For the brightest, most playful children's clothes this is the place to shop.
Have you ever been to Iceland? If so, what are your favorite places to shop?
