Part One: A weekend at the Rolling Huts
This past weekend was spent in Mazama, one of our favorite places in the entire state of Washington. For those of you who have never heard of Mazama, it is located on the eastern slope of the North Cascades with a population of around 200. Mazama has a humid continental climate which means they have warm, dry Summers and cold snowy Winters. Scenery and weather wise this is my kind of place. Living in Seattle we have such temperate weather, we never feel the extremes like Mazama. It is nice to have a place to come which is a mere 3.5-4 hour drive from Seattle, but you feel like you are worlds away from home.
On this particular visit to Mazama we had the opportunity to stay in the Rolling Huts for the first time. As an interior designer and daughter of an architect these rolling structures have intrigued me from the moment I first saw an image of them. I have wanted to stay here for awhile, so when the opportunity to stay presented itself I jumped at the chance.
I would refer to the Rolling Huts as "glamping" or the equivalent of indoor camping. The only thing missing from these huts is indoor plumbing which would make them individual cabins and not the unique, low impact rolling structures they are. These huts are fully furnished with a sleeping platform in the back room and modular furniture in the front room which can be converted into an additional sleeping platform. Two thick memory foam pads are provided along with sheets and pillows. For our added comfort we brought our own pillows and down comforter, but this is definitely not necessary, although nice to have.
Each rolling hut has a wall heater in the back room in addition to a wood burning stove in the front room. There are ample wood stacks below each hut which one could not possibly use up in its entirety during the duration of your stay. During our stay the weather was cold, rainy and wet, but we never felt anything less than utterly comfortable. The sleeping pads were comfortable, the property is peaceful and the wood burning stove made our hut the only place you wanted to be as the rain poured outside.
Rollings Huts make for the perfect weekend getaway. They are cozy and comfortable with the wood burning stove and sleeping platform and pad, but feel restful and removed as they are without running water or televisions. Each hut is relatively small square footage wise, but they are perfect for a couple or unless you don't mind being in tight quarters with other people.
Aside from the living area and sleeping area there is a cooking area which has a small refrigerator and a microwave. For those of you campers out there, this is definitely what makes it "glamping" . The ability to refrigerate your food and heat things up is a real luxury. Since we don't own a microwave, one of the things were we most excited about was eating some microwave popcorn this weekend.
